Nicholas Sparks' The Lucky One

The Lucky OneThe Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Do you have something that you hold on to against all odds?
I have - its name is FAITH.

With a joyous fair, a big ferris wheel and a shooting star as a girl's memory - a lucky charm was "captured". Lost in a war in Iraq, it was found by a Marine with a french ancestry who doesn't believe in faith and fate, but the latter made him walked across the country to reach his destination.

What did he do as soon as he finds the girl...? No plans. Not even fall in love.
But he did.

Hindi ako naiyak sa novel. But since I pictured Zac Efron as a 28-year-old Marine who can play a piano, I am looking forward to the flick. I hope he can make me cry when I see the movie and be moved by the lines and the so-called "drama".

WILL WATCH THE MOVIE ADAPTATION IN 2012 BEFORE THE WORLD ENDS. :)

Nicholas Sparks' A Bend in the Road

A Bend in the RoadA Bend in the Road by Nicholas Sparks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

10 - that is the number of chapters i cried as i read the novel.

It all started in a Bend in the Road. And there it also ended. It contained two sides of the story - of which, both parties are victims of fate.

If you are given the authority to judge a person (i.e. a part of jury), how would you analyze a crime? should it be coming from your own past experiences? or should it come from a fresh start? How would you react? Objectively? Subjectively? Would you let it all go, or would you still hold on?

Sparks made me cry. And that I cannot deny.

Nicholas Spark's The Rescue

The RescueThe Rescue by Nicholas Sparks
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

"I wuff you... Kenk yuu Money, Tayers homm."
[I love you... Thank you Mommy, Taylor's home]

These words of a five-year old kid saying to his patient mother made me cry as I walked home from the office. A bittersweet story, it made me realize that the statement of endearment is normally taken for granted; and when taken seriously, your emotions will be stirred and your heart will be swept away.

Do you have an escape? Nicholas Sparks shared his Slice-of-life as he made this composition. It is for every reader to find out and to reflect and how to address that escape.

The Cat Race

Mama loves telling stories. And now that we are all grown ups, she realized that the stories should also “level up.”

Last night, my mom and I had a “love talk.”

She shared a story of a girl, an intelligent BS Economics student of University of the Philippines (UP), who was secretly in love with her classmate. The guy, thinking that they were compatible with each other, made some ways of wooing her. Fortunately, she reciprocated the feelings of the guy.

Time moved on. The girl, being a career woman, decided to work for the government. The guy, with the pride that he should catch up with his girlfriend or else his barkadas will mock him, decided to be a public servant – no matter how worse the government had become when the former President Marcos left it. The girl worked at the Presidential Management Staff; the guy worked at the Department of Trade and Industry.

Subsequently, coup d’etat occured. Worse came to worst. Myriad of government employees were removed from the position. One of the unfortunate workers was the guy himself. The girl was fortunate to stay in her job. The guy was not, and looked for another job that could at least level up to her. Nakakahiya nga naman sa kanya kung ang lalaki pa mismo ang walang trabaho. He became a salesman, a writer, a part timer in his alumni institution. Finally, fate led him to another agency – the Department of Interior and Local Government.

The girl, thinking the guy was not at her level, thought of breaking him up. The boy, who was deeply disturbed, looked for an outlet - to talk the sad incident. He talked with Mama. After listening to the guy’s story, my Mama advised him to move on. “Letting go of the bitterness and making yourself whole is the only way for love to find you again. And love, being an extraordinary thing, will give you a simple counterpart that will never question who you are; never tolerate her pride for you to cope with; and no sky-high expectations for you to reciprocate. Love means simplicity. When there is love, all things are not complicated. All things fall into place.” (The advice of Mama is, of course, in our layman language.)

Years had passed. The man, still working at the government, befriended Mama. They fell in love, eventually…

Ella: Mama, ibig sabihin…?
Mama: Yes, the college guy is your papa, and the girl in the story is the one where your name came from.

Surprised with the story, I asked my mother how they fell in love, what did my father’s family tell about their relationship, how come papa chose mama among the girls who are career-oriented and independent typed, while mama is only a probinsyana-high-school-graduate-applying-as-a-katulong person?

“Of course there’s lot of issues in our relationship,” she said, adding the monstrous criticisms she received not only from Papa’s family (my father’s siblings are all professionals by the way, an Ateneo grad, him being the UP grad, the UST alumni, and a DOST scholar) but, from papa’s peers as well. Bakit siya? Sa dinami-raming babae sa Maynila.

Mama only repeated what she said as advice to my papa. Love means simplicity. When there is love, everything falls into place. If a relationship makes a life more complicated than it ever was, then it is not love, it is a cat race – chasing dynamism but you can never catch up. What mama and papa have, is love. What papa and his ex had, was a cat race.

Then, I asked her, “So ibig sabihin dapat I should not be a career-woman just to find what I am looking for?” She disagreed. Rather, she asked me what do I aspire when I reach the age of 28. I answered, “If I have a husband that time, of course, I would be a full-time housewife and a part-time professor. Nothing more.” But she followed up about my aspirations to be part of the Ministry of Finance in Australia, or even a researcher in Asian Development Bank.

I hesitated to answer.

“Love is simple, Ella. You don’t have to prove anything. Hindi mo kailangang makipaghabulan. Hindi mo kailangang magpakataas para sa mahal mo kasi hindi iyan ang kailangan. You just have to be who you are. Anuman ang dreams mo, reach for it. But don’t chase another’s dream for the record of job well done and the prestige that it can bring to your peers. Ang pag-ibig hindi isang tropeyo na palaging pinagmamayabang sa pamamagitan ng pag-display nito.”

I appreciated the story Mama. I love the way you differentiate the love and the cat race. If I would be with someone in the future, I wouldn’t allow myself to engage in cat race. After all, what I am now is what I will be in the future – he just has to accept it. If not, then it is not love at all.

Linger Song | The Art of Letting Go

The Hardest Day
The Corrs feat Alejandro Sanz

One more day, one last look
Before I leave it all behind
And play the role that's meant for us
That said we'd say goodbye

One more night (one more night) by your side (by your side)
Where our dreams collide
And all we have is everything
And there's no pain there's no hurt
There's no wrong it's all right

If I promise to believe will you believe
That there's nowhere that we'd rather be
Nowhere describes where we are
I've no choice, I love you
Leave, love you wave goodbye

And all I ever wanted was to stay (all I ever wanted was to stay)
And nothing in this world's gonna change, change

Never wanna wake up from this night
Never (never) wanna leave this moment
Waiting for you only, only you

Never gonna forget every single thing you do
When loving you is my finest hour
Leaving you, the hardest day of my life
The hardest day of my life

I still breathe (I still breathe), I still eat (I still eat)
And the sun it shines the same as it did yesterday
But there's no warmth, no light
I feel empty inside

But I never will regret a single day
I know it isn't going to go away
What I'm feeling (I'm feeling) for you
I will always love you
Leave, love you wave goodbye (love you wave goodbye)

And all, and all I ever wanted was to stay (all I ever wanted was to stay)
Nothing (nothing) in this world's gonna change...

Never wanna wake up from this night
Never (never) wanna leave this moment
Waiting for you only, only you

Never gonna forget every single thing you do
When loving you is my finest hour
I never knew I'd ever feel this way
I feel for you...

Never wanna wake up (I feel for you, I feel for you) from this night
Never (never, never) wanna leave this moment
Waiting for you only, only you

Never gonna forget (never gonna forget) every single thing you do
When loving you is my finest hour
Leaving you, the hardest day of my life...
Never wanna wake up from this night...

This was first heard in the year 2000, I think. But this is the only instance in my office that I’ve heard it over and over for the next two hours of my “office time”. And everytime I reflect to the soul of the song for a minute or so, my heart is breaking.

To others, maybe reflecting to this song (while not even experiencing the scenario being described) would cause negativity on the perception on their current relationship (applicable to those with girlfriend/boyfriend). Maybe they do not want to hear the song at all.

To some of those being through a hard break-up or on the process of letting go, the song may make them cry and empathize on the picture being portrayed in the lyrics, or they may at least internalize the words and let the music and lyrics sink into their dreams.

To me, with no experience having a serious relationship with a special someone, makes me realize that I don’t want to feel the emptiness of being left-out by the one I love. Parang iiyak ako if that would ever happen. And I would like to promise myself that if the “break-up” would ever happen in one stage of my life, I would endure the pain of loneliness, maybe saying the same things whatever the lyrics are trying to say, or maybe hold on to the precious moments; but in the end – would move on with no bitterness in my heart, starting on a clean slate.

Leaving someone special will be the hardest thing to do. Leaving things that are being built up by both of you, memories that are being spent together, little somethings that both of you are sharing... will be half-empty if the other half is gone.

But the art of letting go is reestablishing yourself – making yourself whole again. Starting anew. Because it is through the wholeness you can give your special self to another, and being able to receive the reciprocal... and also, being able to let yourself in love with someone special.

I am sure that I am not the best adviser to the issues on heartbreak and bitterness, but I can only make you stop and listen first to my words (on in this case, stop and read my note). Still, it is your decision to be sunk in the abyss of the negativity brought about by the sad events; or let yourself grieve for a second, but move on – looking forward to the positivity that the life can bring.

Trying to Craft Another Story

I was dreaming last night… but it is so vivid that I can feel myself being part of the story.

It was his party. But amidst the happy mood in the place, I am sad. I am alone. I don’t want to join the merriment because what I feel doesn’t belong to that kind of ambiance. But I have to be there. I have to because –

He’s there.

I want to tell him, I want him to know what I feel. I want to tell him as soon as he enjoyed himself in the celebration – whatever that is.

And for that I will wait. No matter how long… no matter what I feel… I will wait.

And after a long while, everyone has enjoyed the night. Everyone has said their goodbyes, and everyone left – except me.

“Can we talk…?”

I want to ask him, but I just cannot utter a single word. I was nervous, I was afraid. Afraid of what I will say, and what he will answer… but this is the thing: you cannot let it out unless you have the courage to let it out. So I grabbed a bit of courage and asked him.

“Can we talk…?”

Silence.

He did not say anything, but his face was surprised that he saw me. He thought everyone is gone home. As if I did not exist in the party at all.

When he realized there was still one person wanting to talk with him, he just nodded his head.

-Talk-

My conscience told me, shouting for me to start talking and tell everything. Grab another handful of courage and –

-Tell him how you feel-

But I was afraid. Afraid of the unrequited love, of the one-sided feeling… What if he won’t feel the same? What if he turned me down? What if – all are still presumptions, until…

Until the moment that I felt my eyes holding back tears. I was crying.

Bertong badtrip! I woke up… and I can’t remember what happened after that momentous moment. Haist! Sorry if the craft is so corny… I know this is so “high school”… And I realized that I was born to appreciate short stories and other forms of literature, not to be a full time writer of one… Cheers for that!

Matching Courtship with Romance

Do you know who wrote the books I Kissed Dating Goodbye and Boy Meets Girl? I heard another sermon from him this morning, actually I listened through the net...I downloaded his preach regarding love and relationships entitled Romance Revisited: The NECESSITY of Biblical Conviction.
He said that these are the six key points to remeber when dealing with Romance in a way that it matches the Wisdom of God. Here they are:

1. Study God's Word - and the only book that has God's words is the Bible. You have to respect his words and apply this to your everyday lives...he enumerated some passages about love and passion:
a. Philippians 1:9 to 11 - And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God

b. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 - it is my motto in my page...heheh...

c. Colossians 3:5-17 - Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. (just a part, mahaba kasi)

d. 1 Thessalonias 4:1-8 - For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives you his Holy Spirit (magandang part)

e. 1 Timothy 4:12 - Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity

f. Romans 12:9-21 - Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality (magandang part)

2. Pray for the Holy Spirit's Guidance - prayer is a powerful right; exercise it! :)

3. Humbly seek wisdom and counsel - it is said in Proverbs 15:10 that he who hates correction will die; seek not only the wisdom, but also the correctness

4. Read some 'help' books that would help you to understand God's word that can help you to apply the biblical truth to your life - one example are the books I mentioned above

5. Isolate the value of the fruits of your decision - Examine the results of the choices that you made.

Actually antagal ng sermon na ito...but since I'm a fan of Joshua Harris; nakakatuwa siyang pakinggan each time he discusses about romance and relationships...hope this helps, just wanna share lang! :) and don't be like this picture, parang nahihiya/undecided yung guy, kaya parang intimidated yung girl...hehehe...

Courtship Matters

I listened to Joshua Harris' sermon yesterday through the net. It was so refreshing listening to his lessons regarding love, relationship, and courtship. Even though he barely knowns me [duh! kelan ba pumunta ng Philippine si Joshua Harris?!?] for me, he is a good adviser especially to the single beings.

He said in his sermon titled "Courtship Smourtship" that there are Four Areas that are needed to build a healthy and warm courtship. This addresses some misconceptions people can have in their 'ideal courtship' and makes us realize that there are biblical principles to be applied in relationships...

Oh yeah, the four aspects are: Genuity, Discernment, (Brotherly or Sisterly) Affection, and Honor. These are based on Romans 12: 9-10.

Joshua Harris defines courtship as purposely considering another person in marriage (that is my understanding! XD).He also said that a man doesn't just take the girl, rather, he's wooing over the woman (woo means to gain love of a woman with a view of marriage). I love the part when he tackled about the Affection, where he address the inhibitions of the men today - that it is okay to invite a girl for a lunch or dinner or just a coffee break, it doesn't mean that you're already in 'that' stage (in Filipino, okay lang daw magsabay kumain, hindi naman ibig sabihin, kayo na!) ; also the part when he addresses the miscommunication part - Joshua said, "Let a man be your brother and don't assume that there is more to friendship unless the guy actually said it IN MOUTH to you!" [god! i'm laughing my lungs out when i heard that from him].

Anyway, even though I'm not physically present in the church when he preached these things, still I believe listening to him just through the net makes me feel like I'm being personally addressed at... [still can't move on, still laughing my heart out each time I remember the quote above]

Boyfriends for Keeps

Every time that I go to lunch with my officemates, we have the talk of the town: boys, relationships, and marriage. Hindi na sila nagsawa. I mean, why do they ask me if ever I encountered this kind of thing (considering that most of my officemates are older than me)? So I made something, I told them that I have a man, but not a boyfriend…A fling, in short. You are not committed to him, but you have the privilege and the pleasure of belonging, belonging that a person thinks of you as someone special.
Akalain mong magagalit! They even told me that what I am doing is not good as training ground for marriage. Who tell them that I want to get married?! I told them that I wanted to marry when the perfect time comes, regardless of how old you are – 28, 29, 32 – it doesn’t matter. I want to be single for the mean time, I want to do things that a single lady can do: blind dates, mall strolling with friends, out-of-town travels, business jumpstarting...actually those are the few of many possibilities. As they said nga, bata pa ako. I have to be prepared before I encounter relationships. Relationships, together with commitments, are tough work…parang dalawang full time work for a day. Imagine that…tiring and stressful. But in the end, you realize daw that you do your best just to make things work, to make the ends meet. And you will just feel the cloud 9 feeling when you are in love, which is much more special than just having a fling.
Maybe I am afraid to have a lover, or maybe I just don’t want to. Or I think it’s just plain hard.
But at the end of the day, only God can decide what is best for life. For example, a friend of mine wishes for a happy married life (she’s already 27). Five years ago, she met a guy and made love with him… in the end, she regretted it. She wasn’t able to move on. She kept on looking for a man that would erase her past. I told her to pray and if she really wishes to move on, she doesn’t need a man for it. And voila! She has a boyfriend nowadays, a very intelligent and charming one. They take the relationship slowly, savoring every moment between them. The guy knew about her past, and still loves her for who she is.
Come to think of it, you can have this kind of story when you begin to “open up”, to “let go and let god”, and “bloom”. Maybe my officemates are right. Once I change my mentality regarding this thing, I could have a boyfriend – not just a fictitious creation, but for real.
Or maybe not muna. Hehehe…
